The legendary sci-fi horror anime Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is getting a remake by Studio Passione. The characters have been designed by Akio Watanabe (designer of the characters for the Monogatari Series). The teaser trailer, released on March 21, has caused quite the stir among the anime watchers. Higurashi fans are excited to learn through Kadokawa’s live stream that Soichiro Hoshi, Satsuki Yukino, Mika Kanai, Yukari Tamura, and Mai Nakahara are sticking to their voice acting roles as Keiichi Maebara, Mion and Shion Sonozaki, Satoko Hojo, Rika Furude and Rena Ryuugu.
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni or Higurashi: When They Cry is a psychological horror anime set in a small village named Hinamizawa. Keiichi Maebara moves into the village with his parents to escape his troublesome past in town. He becomes acquainted with Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Shion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo who later become his close friends. This village is not as innocent as it looks and is haunted by the superstitions of Lord Oyashiro. A person(s) dies every year at the Watanagashi festival or the Cotton-drifting festival due to the supposed curse of Oyashiro-sama. As the friends try to learn the mystery behind the curse and the assumed sacrifices, the plot unfolds into various arcs based on time travel and an epidemic that has been confined to the village since history.
The anime is based on its visual light novel and was released as When They Cry (2006), Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Nekogoroshi-hen (2007), When They Cry: Kai (2007), Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (2009), Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira (2011–2012), Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak (2013).
The fans are extremely pleased with the fluidity of the Higurashi characters and the new character designs. The Higurashi anime remake, Higurashi: When They Cry (2020) is to be a TV anime and will be released in July 2020.
